For the last 10 years I’ve manage to maintain my ideal weight. In contrast I spent the 10 previous years working to lose weight and failing to lose a single pound. Here are two secrets:
First, is the Full Plate Diet. OK, that’s not a secret, you already know about that.
Second, and here’s the surprising secret (I call this a surprising secret because popular opinion points in one direction while research points the other direction): I weigh myself just about every morning. Every morning! Yes, every morning. I know the media tells us not to do that for fear we will become discouraged. However, I find it less discouraging to get on the scale and discover I put on a couple of pounds than to get on the scale once a month and discover I put on 10 pounds.
Here’s what studies say about frequent weigh-ins:
- Those that weighed themselves daily lost twice as much weight as those that weighed-in weekly. *
- Those who had lost weight and weighed themselves daily were 82% more likely to keep the weight off than those who didn’t.**
There is one word of caution here: I wouldn’t encourage a person with an eating disorder to do this. But if you are a relatively healthy person who simple wants to lose weight; you might want to make friends with your scale.
